Hypnosis & Dissociation: learn about them today

Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a common approach used in psychology to access the subconscious part of the brain. The aim is to identify past experiences that trigger a negative behavioural pattern such as addiction. Memory enhancement via the subconscious mind helps to deal with the situation better than use of medical treatment alone.

Dissociation

Dissociation can be explained as disconnection from yourself or the world around you simply. It has a similar concept as day dreaming. Human beings have the ability of disconnecting their memories or emotions from themselves. You can be aware or not when dissociating. The intensity varies among individuals. For example, you can revisit your day’s happenings. On the other hand, it could be severe to an extent of altering an individual’s mental state caused by a trigger.

Correlation

1. Accessing the unconscious mind

Dissociative disorders are commonly triggered by uncomfortable environments. It could be a past-related issue that triggers fear or anxiety. An individual can dissociate from the current environment away from the conscious mind to get through the anxiety. The unconscious mind seems to be safer than the conscious part because you do not have to deal with the current situation.

On the other hand, psychologists use dissociation during hypnosis to split off from the conscious mind of the individual. The dissociative hypnotic language is used. They access the unconscious mind of the individual to understand the repetitive pattern and the trigger. It is easy to counter this behavioural pattern by dealing with the root of the problem.

2. Conscious mind

It is possible to access the subconscious mind during both dissociation and hypnosis keeping the conscious part active. For example, a psychologist might request you to count from 100 backwards to trigger relaxation during an anxiety attack. You do not zone off from the world completely. You dissociate partially to access the unconscious mind through hypnosis. Same way you would be walking down a street and day dreaming.

3. Controlled Vs. uncontrolled

It is possible to experience negative behavioural pattern that cause harm to self. Some people dissociate from the current experience to control the situation. However, when it causes harm to you and cannot be controlled, professional help is recommended. They use hypnosis to dissociate your conscious mind from the subconscious part to know the trigger. The psychologist will come up with a program or different solutions that will ease up the trigger’s effect. The aim is to enable you to come to terms with the past experiences that lead to the behavioural pattern.
